The history of Purple Urkle

Purple Urkle is a California indica with a long reputation and little documentation: most accounts date it to the late 1980s and describe it as a selected phenotype of Mendocino Purps, and none names a breeder.1,2,3

Timeline

  1. 1980sPurple Urkle appears in California; AllBud dates it to the late 1980s, and United Cannabis Seeds and CannaConnection to the 1980s.2,4,5
  2. Late 1980s–1990sWeedmaps places its roots in Northern California in this window, as a standout phenotype of Mendocino Purps.1
  3. Mid-1990sA minority account, which The Cannigma attributes to the book Cannabis Pharmacy, has it first bred in West Hollywood.6

Why it lasted

Flavor and color did most of the work. Westword counted Purple Urkle among the originals of the syrupy grape smell later strains took on, and Weedmaps calls its nose classic purple weed from before candy-flavored strains took over menus.1,11

It also became breeding stock. Weedmaps credits it with the color and fruit of Granddaddy Purple (Leafly lists other parents), and breeders have crossed it into Orange Sherbert, Gobbstopper, Sour Urkle and White Urkle.7,8,16,17,18,19

Today it is absent from the best-seller lists we checked, and few stores list it (see where to find it).14,15,20

The name

The name is usually read as a nod to a character from the sitcom Family Matters, though Westword calls its history cloudy.4,11 Strain databases spell it Purple Urkle, while SeedFinder’s genealogy for one seed version uses Purple Urkel.1,2,3,21

The disputed parts of the story

  • Origin: most accounts say California in the late 1980s (Weedmaps: Northern California); The Cannigma, citing the book Cannabis Pharmacy, reports a mid-1990s West Hollywood origin.1,2,6
  • Parent: a selected phenotype of Mendocino Purps (most sources) or of Granddaddy Purple (a less common view AllBud mentions).2,3
  • Offspring: whether Granddaddy Purple descends from it (see genetics).7,8
